Preposition in English Grammar

Preposition কী?

A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show relation with another word.

Lesson #10-এ আপনি Article A, An, The শিখেছেন। Article যেমন noun-এর আগে বসে, preposition-ও সাধারণত noun বা pronoun-এর আগে বসে relation তৈরি করে। তাই noun phrase, sentence structure এবং spoken English বুঝতে preposition খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Preposition sentence-এর words-এর মধ্যে relation দেখায়। কোনো জিনিস কোথায় আছে, কখন হচ্ছে, কোথা থেকে আসছে, কোথায় যাচ্ছে, কী দিয়ে হচ্ছে বা কার জন্য হচ্ছে — এসব বোঝাতে preposition ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Important Rules

In, On, At and Other Preposition Rules

Preposition শেখার সবচেয়ে important part হলো context অনুযায়ী correct word ব্যবহার করা।

In, On, At for Time

In = month, year, season, long period. On = days and dates. At = exact time.

in January, in 2026, in summer
on Monday, on 5 July
at 7 am, at night, at noon

In, On, At for Place

In = inside/area. On = surface. At = specific point/location.

on the table, on the wall, on the floor
at the bus stop, at school, at the door

To vs For

To often shows direction or receiver. For often shows purpose or benefit.

I am going to school.
I gave the book to him.
This gift is for you.
I study for my exam.

Since vs For

Since = starting point. For = duration.

since 2020, since Monday, since morning
for two years, for five days, for a long time

By vs With

By often shows doer/agent or method. With often shows instrument/tool or togetherness.

The book was written by Rahim.
I go to school by bus.
I cut the paper with scissors.
She went with her friend.

Speaking এবং writing-এ এই prepositions বারবার ব্যবহার হয়।

Common Mistakes

Bengali Learnersদের Common Preposition Mistakes

Preposition ছোট word হলেও ভুল preposition sentence-এর meaning বদলে দিতে পারে।

I am good in English. ❌

I am good at English. ✅

Skill বা subject-এ ভালো বোঝাতে good at ব্যবহার হয়।

She is married with him. ❌

She is married to him. ✅

Married-এর সাথে সাধারণত to ব্যবহৃত হয়।

I discussed about the problem. ❌

I discussed the problem. ✅

Discuss verb-এর পরে সরাসরি object বসে; about লাগে না।

He reached at Dhaka. ❌

He reached Dhaka. ✅

Reach-এর পরে সাধারণত place direct object হিসেবে আসে।

I am waiting your reply. ❌

I am waiting for your reply. ✅

Wait-এর পরে object থাকলে for লাগে।

I was born in Friday. ❌

I was born on Friday. ✅

Day-এর আগে on বসে।
