Conjunction in English Grammar

Conjunction হলো এমন word যা words, phrases, clauses বা sentences connect করে। English sentence সুন্দর, connected এবং meaningful করতে conjunction খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আমরা যখন দুটি idea, reason, contrast, condition, choice বা result একসাথে বলতে চাই, তখন conjunction ব্যবহার করি। Bengali learnersদের জন্য and, but, or, because, although, if, so, either…or, neither…nor—এসব conjunction বুঝে ব্যবহার করা fluency এবং writing skill বাড়ানোর জন্য খুব helpful. এই lesson-এ conjunction meaning, types, examples, rules, common mistakes, practice এবং quiz সহজভাবে শিখবেন।

Conjunction কী?

A conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.

Previous Lesson-এর সাথে Connection

Lesson #11-এ আপনি Preposition শিখেছেন। Preposition noun বা pronoun-এর সাথে relation দেখায়। Conjunction words, phrases বা clauses connect করে। তাই connected sentence, compound sentence এবং complex sentence বুঝতে conjunction খুব important.

Conjunction ছাড়া English sentence অনেক সময় ছোট ছোট আলাদা sentence হয়ে যায়। Conjunction ব্যবহার করলে আমরা দুইটি idea একসাথে naturally বলতে পারি।

I like tea and coffee.
She is poor but honest.
I stayed home because I was sick.
You can take tea or coffee.

Coordinating	Connects equal words, phrases, or clauses	and, but, or, so	I was tired, but I studied.
Subordinating	Connects dependent clause with main clause	because, although, if, when	I stayed home because I was sick.
Correlative	Works in pairs	either…or, neither…nor	Either study or sleep.
Conjunctive Adverb	Connects ideas with transition meaning	however, therefore, moreover	He was sick; however, he worked.

Common Conjunction Rules

Conjunction ব্যবহার করার সময় meaning এবং sentence structure দুটোই বুঝতে হয়।

And

And similar ideas, addition বা extra information যোগ করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

I like tea and coffee.
She is smart and hardworking.
He opened the book and started reading.

But

But contrast বা opposite idea দেখাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

He is poor but honest.
I wanted to go, but I was busy.
The question is difficult but important.

Or

Or choice, option বা alternative বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Do you want tea or coffee?
Study hard, or you may fail.
You can call me or send a message.

Because

Because reason বা cause বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

I stayed home because I was sick.
She was happy because she passed the exam.

Although

Although contrast দেখায়, কিন্তু but-এর মতো একই structure নয়। সাধারণত although এবং but একসাথে একই clause pair-এ ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়।

Although he was tired, he continued working. ✅
He was tired, but he continued working. ✅
Although he was tired, but he continued working. ❌

Either…Or / Neither…Nor

Either…or দুইটির মধ্যে একটি choice বোঝায়। Neither…nor দুইটির কোনোটিই না বোঝায়।

Either you study or you fail.
Neither Rahim nor Karim came to class.
She is both smart and kind.

Conjunction ভুলভাবে ব্যবহার করলে sentence unnatural বা grammatically wrong হয়।

Although he was tired, but he studied. ❌

Although he was tired, he studied. ✅

Although এবং but একই contrast pair-এ একসাথে ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়।

Because I was sick. ❌

I stayed home because I was sick. ✅

Because clause সাধারণত main clause-এর সাথে ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

Neither Rahim or Karim came. ❌

Neither Rahim nor Karim came. ✅

Neither-এর pair হলো nor.

Either you study nor you fail. ❌

Either you study or you fail. ✅

Either-এর pair হলো or.

I like tea but coffee. ❌

I like tea and coffee. ✅

Same type positive ideas যোগ করতে and ব্যবহার হয়।

He is poor and honest. ❌ / Sometimes wrong meaning

He is poor but honest. ✅

Contrast দেখাতে but ব্যবহার করা ভালো।
