Past Continuous Tense in English Grammar

Past Continuous Tense কী?

Past Continuous Tense is used to describe an action that was happening at a specific time in the past.

Previous Lesson-এর সাথে Connection

Lesson #20-এ আপনি Simple Past Tense শিখেছেন, যা অতীতে completed action বোঝায়। Past Continuous Tense তার থেকে আলাদা, কারণ এটি অতীতে কোনো সময় action চলছিল বোঝায়। Simple past বলে কাজটি শেষ হয়েছে, আর past continuous বলে কাজটি তখন চলছিল।

Past Continuous Tense-এর main structure হলো Subject + was/were + V-ing. I/he/she/it/singular subject-এর সাথে was, আর you/we/they/plural subject-এর সাথে were ব্যবহার হয়।

I was studying at 8 pm.
She was cooking dinner.
They were playing football.
It was raining last night.

এখানে was studying, was cooking, were playing, এবং was raining past continuous tense.

Past Continuous Tense Structure

Positive, negative এবং question structure ভালোভাবে বুঝুন।

Sentence Type	Structure	Example	Bangla Meaning
Positive	Subject + was/were + V-ing + Object	I was studying English.	আমি English পড়ছিলাম।
Negative	Subject + was/were + not + V-ing + Object	She was not cooking dinner.	সে রাতের খাবার রান্না করছিল না।
Question	Was/Were + Subject + V-ing + Object?	Were they playing football?	তারা কি football খেলছিল?
Wh-Question	Wh-word + was/were + Subject + V-ing?	What were you doing?	তুমি কী করছিলে?
Interrupted Action	Past Continuous + when + Simple Past	I was sleeping when he called.	সে ফোন করেছিল যখন আমি ঘুমাচ্ছিলাম।

Very Important Rule

Past Continuous Tense-এ main verb সবসময় V-ing হবে। Correct: I was studying. Wrong: I was study.

Past continuous tense ঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করতে was/were, V-ing, when এবং while clear করতে হবে।

Basic Rule

Past continuous tense-এর structure হলো Subject + was/were + V-ing.

I was reading.
She was writing.
They were playing.

Was / Were Rule

I, he, she, it এবং singular subject-এর সাথে was ব্যবহার হয়। You, we, they এবং plural subject-এর সাথে were ব্যবহার হয়।

I was working.
He was sleeping.
You were studying.
They were waiting.

Negative Structure

Negative করতে was/were-এর পরে not বসে।

I was not sleeping.
She was not watching TV.
They were not playing.

Question Structure

Question করতে was/were sentence-এর শুরুতে বসে।

Was he sleeping?
Were they playing?
What were you doing?
Where was she going?

When / While Rule

When সাধারণত short action-এর সাথে যায়। While সাধারণত ongoing action-এর সাথে যায়।

I was reading when he called me.
He called me while I was reading.
While I was cooking, my sister was studying.

Simple Past vs Past Continuous

Simple past completed action বোঝায়। Past continuous অতীতে চলমান action বোঝায়।

I studied at 8 pm. = completed action or simple past fact
I was studying at 8 pm. = action was happening at that time
He called me. = completed action
He called me while I was sleeping. = one action interrupted another

Past continuous tense-এ নির্দিষ্ট past time, when এবং while খুব common.

all evening	Long past duration	They were studying all evening.	তারা পুরো সন্ধ্যা পড়ছিল।
last night	Past situation	It was raining last night.	গত রাতে বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল।
at that time	Past moment	He was working at that time.	সে তখন কাজ করছিল।

Bengali Learnersদের Common Past Continuous Mistakes

Past continuous tense-এ learnersরা was/were, V-ing এবং simple past confusion নিয়ে বেশি ভুল করে।

I was study English. ❌

I was studying English. ✅

Past continuous tense-এ was/were + V-ing লাগে।

She were cooking. ❌

She was cooking. ✅

She-এর সাথে was ব্যবহার হয়।

They was playing. ❌

They were playing. ✅

They-এর সাথে were ব্যবহার হয়।

Was they studying? ❌

Were they studying? ✅

They-এর question form-এ were বসে।

I was sleeping when he was called me. ❌

I was sleeping when he called me. ✅

Interrupted short action সাধারণত simple past হয়।

I was knowing the answer. ❌

I knew the answer. ✅

Know stative verb, সাধারণত continuous form হয় না।
