Past Perfect Continuous Tense কী?

Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to show that an action had been continuing for some time before another action or time in the past.

Previous Lesson-এর সাথে Connection

Lesson #22-এ আপনি Past Perfect Tense শিখেছেন, যার structure হলো had + V3 এবং এটি earlier completed past action বোঝায়। Past Perfect Continuous Tense সেই idea-কে duration/process focus দিয়ে প্রকাশ করে। অর্থাৎ অতীতের আরেকটি ঘটনার আগে কোনো কাজ কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছিল, সেটি বোঝাতে এই tense ব্যবহার হয়।

Past Perfect Continuous Tense-এর main structure হলো Subject + had been + V-ing. এখানে had been সব subject-এর সাথে একই থাকে এবং main verb-এর সাথে -ing যোগ হয়।

I had been studying for two hours before he came.
She had been working since morning before she took a break.
They had been waiting for thirty minutes before the bus arrived.
It had been raining all night before the road flooded.

এখানে had been studying, had been working, had been waiting, এবং had been raining past perfect continuous tense.

Positive	Subject + had been + V-ing + Object + since/for	I had been studying for two hours.	আমি দুই ঘণ্টা ধরে পড়ছিলাম।
Negative	Subject + had not been + V-ing + Object	She had not been working since morning.	সে সকাল থেকে কাজ করছিল না।
Question	Had + Subject + been + V-ing + Object?	Had they been waiting for long?	তারা কি অনেকক্ষণ ধরে অপেক্ষা করছিল?
Wh-Question	Wh-word + had + Subject + been + V-ing?	How long had you been learning English?	তুমি কতদিন ধরে English শিখছিলে?
Before Past Action	Past Perfect Continuous + before + Simple Past	He had been running before he got tired.	সে ক্লান্ত হওয়ার আগে দৌড়াচ্ছিল।

Very Important Rule

Past Perfect Continuous Tense-এ main structure সবসময় had been + V-ing. Correct: I had been studying. Wrong: I had studying / I had been study.

এই tense ঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করতে had been, V-ing, since/for এবং past action order clear করতে হবে।

Basic Rule

Past perfect continuous tense-এর structure হলো Subject + had been + V-ing.

I had been reading.
She had been working.
They had been waiting.

Had Been Rule

সব subject-এর সাথে had been ব্যবহার হয়। Had been-এর পরে main verb V-ing হবে।

I had been studying.
He had been studying.
They had been studying.
We had been studying.

Since / For Rule

Since starting point বোঝায়। For duration বোঝায়। Past perfect continuous tense-এ এগুলো খুব common.

since morning, since 2020, since Monday
for two hours, for five days, for a long time
She had been working since morning.
They had been waiting for thirty minutes.

Before / By the Time

Before বা by the time দিয়ে বোঝানো যায় যে কোনো কাজ অতীতের আরেকটি সময়ের আগে কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছিল।

I had been studying for two hours before he came.
By the time the teacher arrived, we had been waiting for ten minutes.
She had been cooking before the guests arrived.

Past Perfect vs Past Perfect Continuous

Past perfect completion/result focus করে। Past perfect continuous duration/process focus করে।

I had finished my homework before dinner. = result complete
I had been doing my homework for two hours before dinner. = duration/process
She had read three pages. = quantity/result
She had been reading for an hour. = duration

Stative Verbs Usually Avoid Continuous

Know, believe, like, love, understand, own, need—এই ধরনের stative verbs সাধারণত continuous form-এ ব্যবহার হয় না।

I had known him for years before we worked together. ✅

She had liked English since childhood. ✅

Bengali Learnersদের Common Past Perfect Continuous Mistakes

এই tense-এ learnersরা had been, V-ing, since/for এবং past perfect confusion নিয়ে বেশি ভুল করে।

I had studying for two hours. ❌

I had been studying for two hours. ✅

Past perfect continuous tense-এ had been + V-ing লাগে।

She had been study since morning. ❌

She had been studying since morning. ✅

Been-এর পরে main verb V-ing হবে।

They have been waiting before the bus arrived. ❌

They had been waiting before the bus arrived. ✅

দুটি past action হলে past perfect continuous-এ had been ব্যবহার হয়।

Duration বোঝাতে for ব্যবহার হয়।

Question form-এও been-এর পরে V-ing হবে।
