Past Perfect Tense in English Grammar

Past Perfect Tense কী?

Past Perfect Tense is used to show that one past action happened before another past action.

Lesson #21-এ আপনি Past Continuous Tense শিখেছেন, যা অতীতের কোনো সময়ে কাজ চলছিল বোঝায়। Past Perfect Tense তার থেকে আলাদা, কারণ এটি অতীতের আরেকটি কাজের আগেই কোনো কাজ সম্পন্ন হয়েছিল—এটি বোঝায়।

Past Perfect Tense-এর main structure হলো Subject + had + V3. এখানে had সব subject-এর সাথে একই থাকে। I, you, he, she, it, we, they—সব subject-এর সাথে had ব্যবহার করা যায়।

I had finished my homework before dinner.
She had left before I arrived.
They had completed the work by 5 pm.
The train had already started when we reached the station.

এখানে had finished, had left, had completed, এবং had already started past perfect tense.

Past Perfect Tense Structure

Positive, negative এবং question structure ভালোভাবে বুঝুন।

Sentence Type	Structure	Example	Bangla Meaning
Positive	Subject + had + V3 + Object	I had finished my work.	আমি আমার কাজ শেষ করেছিলাম।
Negative	Subject + had not + V3 + Object	She had not completed the task.	সে কাজটি শেষ করেনি / করেনি ছিল।
Question	Had + Subject + V3 + Object?	Had you finished the work?	তুমি কি কাজটি শেষ করেছিলে?
Wh-Question	Wh-word + had + Subject + V3?	Where had he gone?	সে কোথায় গিয়েছিল?
Two Past Actions	Past Perfect + before/when + Simple Past	She had left before I arrived.	আমি পৌঁছানোর আগে সে চলে গিয়েছিল।

Very Important Rule

Past Perfect Tense-এ main verb সবসময় V3 হবে। Correct: I had finished. Wrong: I had finish / I had went.

Past perfect tense ঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করতে had + V3, before/after এবং action order clear করতে হবে।

Basic Rule

Past perfect tense-এর structure হলো Subject + had + V3.

I had finished.
She had gone.
They had arrived.

Had + V3 Rule

সব subject-এর সাথে had ব্যবহার হয়। Had-এর পরে main verb V3 হবে।

I had eaten.
He had eaten.
They had eaten.
We had eaten.

Before / After Rule

Before বা after ব্যবহার করে দুটি past action-এর order বোঝানো যায়। আগে হওয়া কাজটি past perfect হতে পারে।

I had finished my homework before I went to bed.
After she had cooked dinner, she watched TV.
He left after he had completed the work.

By the Time Rule

By the time দিয়ে বোঝানো হয় যে কোনো past point-এর আগেই action complete হয়েছিল।

By the time I reached the station, the train had left.
By the time she arrived, the meeting had started.

Already / Just Rule

Already বা just দিয়ে বোঝানো যায় যে কাজটি past-এর আরেকটি event-এর আগেই সম্পন্ন হয়েছিল।

He had already eaten when I called him.
She had just finished the work when her teacher arrived.

Simple Past vs Past Perfect

Simple past past action বোঝায়। Past perfect তার আগের past action বোঝায়।

I arrived at the station. = simple past
The train had left before I arrived. = earlier past action
She cooked dinner. = simple past
She had cooked dinner before her guests came. = earlier past action

Bengali Learnersদের Common Past Perfect Mistakes

Past perfect tense-এ learnersরা had + V3, V2/V3 confusion এবং simple past confusion নিয়ে বেশি ভুল করে।

I had finish my work. ❌

I had finished my work. ✅

Past perfect tense-এ had + V3 লাগে।

She had went home. ❌

She had gone home. ✅

Go-এর V3 হলো gone, went নয়।

They have completed the work before I came. ❌

They had completed the work before I came. ✅

দুটি past action হলে earlier action past perfect হতে পারে।

Had you went there? ❌

Had you gone there? ✅

Had-এর পরে V3 বসবে।

I had saw him before. ❌

I had seen him before. ✅

See-এর V3 হলো seen, saw নয়।

The train left before I had arrived. ❌ / Usually unnatural

The train had left before I arrived. ✅

যে কাজ আগে হয়েছে সেটিকে past perfect করা ভালো।
