Story Writing in English: Easy Narrative Structure

What is Story Writing?

Story writing হলো এমন writing যেখানে একটি ঘটনা, experience বা imaginary situation ধারাবাহিকভাবে উপস্থাপন করা হয়।

একটি ভালো story শুধু events বলে না; এটি reader-এর মধ্যে curiosity এবং emotion তৈরি করে।

The Basic Story Formula

Character + Setting + Problem + Action + Solution + Ending

Story Structure: The 5 Parts

1. Beginning

Introduce the characters and place. Reader যেন বুঝতে পারে story কোথায় এবং কার সম্পর্কে।

2. Situation

Explain what normal life looked like before the main event happened।

3. Problem or Conflict

Every interesting story needs a challenge, question, or problem.

4. Solution

Show how the character solves or responds to the problem.

5. Ending

Finish the story with a result, lesson, or final feeling.

Creating Strong Characters

Who?

Name, age, role, background.

What?

Goal, desire, challenge.

Why?

Reason behind actions.

Setting: Where and When?

A story becomes stronger when readers know the environment.

Weak:
A man went somewhere.

Better:
On a rainy evening, a young man walked through a quiet village road searching for his lost dog.

Then, After that, Suddenly, Meanwhile

Finally, In the end, Since then

Using Past Tense in Stories

Most stories are written in past tense because we usually describe events that already happened.

I walked to the market.
She found an old letter.
They decided to help him.

Common Bengali Learner Mistakes

Mistake 1: No clear structure

Events are written randomly without beginning or ending.

Mistake 2: Too much description, no action

A story needs movement and events.

Mistake 3: Changing tense randomly

Keep the tense consistent.

Mistake 4: Ending suddenly

Give the reader a proper conclusion.

Example Story Plan

Title: The Lost Wallet

  • Character: A university student
  • Setting: A busy city street
  • Problem: Lost wallet
  • Action: Searches and asks for help
  • Solution: Finds an honest person who returned it
  • Lesson: Honesty matters

One morning, I decided to visit a new place near my hometown. During the journey, I met an old man who needed help. I stopped and helped him reach his destination. Later, I discovered that he was a retired teacher who had inspired many students. That day became one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
